The Old Bank House, Bagnelstown, Co. Carlow lies in the heart of a small thriving town in rural Ireland. It has numerous restaurants, bars and shops, indeed all you would expect from a vibrant town. The town is situated right on the river Barrow which has some of the best coarse fishing in Europe, with international competitions held regularly.
This is an old town with lots of character and charm, in both its buildings and its people. It has an old Victorian train station which is a key to Dublin and the South and lies 20mins from the impressive medieval city of Kilkenny. Its intricate run of canals and rivers makes it the most perfect place for long peaceful walks, cycling, kayaking or fishing. 15 mins in the other direction will take you to the large market town of Carlow, complete with galleries, theatre and cinemas.
Bagenalstown is indeed one of the most beautiful towns in this area, awash with flowers during the “Floral Festival“ and old mills from its long history.
This is a very large Georgian period house in the center of an old town. Built in 1814 it is an imposing building of three stories above a full basement. It has 7 bedrooms in the main house and 3 bedrooms in the coach house. The gardens are the original Georgian layout, complete with lawns and mature rose bushes, shrubs and flowers. It has the most private garden with a 20ft stone wall surrounding it draped in ivy and roses and perfect for lazy afternoon breakfast, lunches and BBQ.
The whole house has recently been renovated and returned to its former glory. It has all the modern conveniences and is lovingly adorned with some of the most beautiful antiques of the Georgian and Victorian period.
The town of Bagenalstown is the perfect place to begin to explore rural Ireland. The town has an outdoor public swimming pool beside the river Barrow, where traditional barges can be rented to travel up and down the canal systems.
There are world class golf courses in the region, clay pigeon shooting, castles to visit, an active cricket club, numerous old listed buildings and churches and many mountain walks.
